Teen Read Week Photobucket

Welcome to your wiki for the week of October 12 - 18, 2008. You are invited to post comments about books that you are currently reading, have recently read, or want to read. If you have suggestions for the THS library to purchase for the collection, this would be a great place to make them. (Banner - copyright of the American Library Association - Teen Read Week)

This is TEEN READ WEEK and the theme this year is "Books With Bite!" Check out the display and windows. We are doing exciting things in the THS library including having your picture taken reading a book (with vampire teeth and a cape if you like), guessing how many pieces of Orbit gum are in the glass head, and this wiki! However, I don't see any comments! Where are my readers? There were about 900 books checked out in the month of September of this year so I know you are out there. Tell me what you are reading now, what you want to read (make suggestions for the library) and let's chat about books!

The books kids today are reading are crap. They need to be forced to read classics so that they might develop an actual sense of culture. The reason america has become so stupid is that we allow children to read overly dramatic interpretations of dumbed down situtions, dumbed down, for dumb kids. Happy teen read week.

Mr. Constitution, I'm sorry that you feel this way! There are many great fiction books for young adults to read today, both classics and new fiction. The Harry Potter books have really gotten kids excited about reading again and that is very powerful and inspiring for teachers, librarians, and parents. Don't be disappointed in your fellow students...at least they are reading! Maybe not what you would read, but reading, non the less. Everyone has a choice and reading different genres is, in essence, a constitutional right.

What I would read is immaterial. My preferences in books have no bearing on my opinions here. Kids today have stopped reading, not due to the content of books, but the ease of TV. If parents would only highly limit their children's TV intake for the first five to ten years of their life, they would develop a healthy interest in the world around them. TV is the soul reason kids today are so stupid, over-weight, and not interested in reading. TV is the bane of the human experience.

I could not agree with you more! TV is the bane of my existence....I would rather be buried in a GOOD book than watching Project Runway! It is a sad fact that students don't read...back in my day <grin>, we only had 3 TV (maybe 4 if you could get good reception) stations to choose from so options were limited. Reading was a better way to pass the time. However, I also think that it is a sign of the times. We are into instant gratification and that is what TV, the Internet, and video gaming is all about. So sad...
